The young adventurers of the 4th Enfield Scouts have recently demonstrated their mettle by conquering one of the most formidable hiking challenges in the scouting calendar—the Chiltern 20 Challenge. This annual event, set against the picturesque yet demanding backdrop of the Chiltern Hills, tests the scouts’ navigation skills, teamwork, and endurance.
This year, two spirited teams from the 4th Enfield Scouts took part, with participants ranging from 10.5 to 14.5 years old. The challenge was divided into two routes: a junior route spanning approximately 10 kilometres, and a main event covering a grueling 20 kilometres. Armed with only a map and compass, the scouts navigated through checkpoints and tackled the varied terrain with commendable determination.
The junior teams approached the shorter route with boundless energy and enthusiasm, embodying the true spirit of scouting. Meanwhile, the older scouts in the main event displayed impressive resilience, overcoming both physical and mental hurdles to complete the course. For many, this was their inaugural experience in such a demanding event, making their achievement all the more remarkable.
